COASTAL PROTECTION

Lowestoft remains the only major coastal town in the UK without formal tidal flood defences.

As our coastal communities face increasing risks from tidal flooding, storm surges and extreme rainfall, securing long-term flood protection has become one of my key priorities.

I have been leading the case for a new flood barrier for Lowestoft, working with ministers, local partners and the Environment Agency to strengthen the evidence for the investment needed to protect homes, businesses and critical infrastructure across the town. I have raised the issue directly with the Secretary of State, held ongoing discussions with the Flooding Minister, and continue to press Government to back the long-term protection Lowestoft deserves.

Following the recent changes at Suffolk County Council, I have also written to the new Cabinet Members to reaffirm the urgent need for a flood barrier for Lowestoft and to ensure the Council continues to work closely with partners to secure the investment our town needs.

Alongside this, I secured £38,000 for Suffolk County Council to work with the Environment Agency on tackling surface water flooding in Beccles. Areas such as Fen Lane are particularly affected, and this funding will support detailed investigations and the development of practical solutions to reduce future flooding.

I am also working to address flooding challenges across the wider constituency. In Kessingland, I brought together Anglian Water, East Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council and local residents for a multi-agency walkabout to examine the persistent flooding and sewage issues affecting local streets and homes, and to push for faster, better coordinated action.

Every conversation I have with Government and local agencies strengthens the case for greater investment in coastal resilience across our area.

Protecting our communities from flooding is about more than responding to emergencies. It is about giving people the confidence that their homes, businesses and neighbourhoods will be protected for generations to come.
