SUPPORTING OUR COASTGUARD RESCUE OFFICERS

I’ve received a number of representations about the ongoing review of HM Coastguard Rescue Officer remuneration and its potential implications for our Coastguard Rescue Service.

Recent legal judgments and updated HMRC guidance mean the Government now needs to review the current remuneration arrangements for Coastguard Rescue Officers.

As part of the Government’s ongoing review, I’ve joined with other Labour MPs representing coastal constituencies to write to the Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, Keir Mather, to ensure the concerns and experiences shared with me help inform that review.

Coastguard Rescue Officers respond at all hours and in all weather conditions to incidents including cliff and mud rescues, flooding, missing persons, medical emergencies and those in difficulty at sea. Alongside this, they undertake extensive mandatory training, including more than 100 hours of first aid training to a standard comparable with basic paramedic skills, enabling them to provide immediate care while other emergency services are on the way.

Their dedication and professionalism are invaluable, and it’s important that any future arrangements continue to recognise the unique contribution they make to keeping our coastal communities safe.
