SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN FOR A BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE GCSE

This week in the Education Select Committee, I asked Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson about progress on implementing the British Sign Language (BSL) GCSE.

My constituent Daniel Jillings began campaigning for a BSL GCSE when he was just 12 years old, helping secure recognition by the Department for Education. But despite this important step forward, no exam boards currently offer the GCSE.

I was pleased to hear the Education Secretary agree that bringing the qualification forward would be a welcome step. Attention must now turn to exam boards, so that young people can finally study and sit a BSL GCSE.

I look forward to continuing to support Daniel and his campaign to turn recognition into reality.
