£2 CAP ON BUS FARES FROM JANUARY
I am glad to see that the Government has today announced that bus fares will be capped at £2 from January 2027.
This is vital action to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, particularly for people in coastal areas like ours.
This welcome news comes on top of:
Free bus travel for children aged five to fifteen this August
Powers in the Bus Services Act for local areas to establish bus franchising, as exists in London and Greater Manchester
The first rail fare freeze in 30 years, estimated to save passengers £600 million

The £2 cap on bus fares will cost the Government £454 million, which will be funded by reprioritising the budget of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, including by switching international climate finance projects from grants to loans.
