Fisheries Minister Daniel Zeichner MP Visits World-Class Marine Research Facilities in Lowestoft

6th December 2024

I had the privilege of visiting the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) in Lowestoft alongside Daniel Zeichner MP, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs. Cefas is a remarkable institution at the forefront of marine research, tackling critical global issues such as overfishing, climate change, marine pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Our visit began at the Cefas Lowestoft Laboratory in Pakefield, where Minister Zeichner and I attended the closing session of the annual student conference. This event highlights Cefas' dedication to nurturing the next generation of marine scientists, providing PhD students with a platform to share their research with the wider organisation. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and expertise of these young researchers, whose work will be instrumental in protecting our marine environment for future generations.

Following a tour of the laboratory, we visited the RV Cefas Endeavour, the organisation’s state-of-the-art research vessel moored in Lowestoft port. This vessel plays a crucial role in the UK’s marine science and environmental monitoring efforts. During our time onboard, we met with expert scientists who demonstrated the ship’s research facilities and specialist equipment. Seeing this cutting-edge technology in action reinforced my belief in the importance of investing in marine science to safeguard our coastal and marine ecosystems.

A key focus of the visit was exploring Cefas’ future infrastructure plans and how investment in advanced research capabilities will enhance the UK’s ability to monitor and protect our marine environments. Cefas’ ambitious vision for the future underscores its position as a leader in marine science and innovation, not just nationally but globally.

Cefas is a jewel in Lowestoft’s crown, playing a vital role in addressing global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable fisheries management. Its work highlights Lowestoft as a hub for marine science and innovation, while also deeply benefiting our community.

Cefas also has incredible potential to inspire future scientists through its education programmes and apprenticeships, raising aspirations for young people across Suffolk. By combining world-class research with community engagement, Cefas represents the best of Lowestoft. I am proud to support this institution as it shapes a sustainable future for our planet and our town.

I am immensely proud to support Cefas and its vital work. As the MP for Lowestoft, I will continue championing the importance of marine research and ensuring that Cefas receives the support and investment it needs to thrive. By combining world-leading science with strong community engagement, Cefas exemplifies the best of Lowestoft and plays a fundamental role in shaping a sustainable future for both our town and our planet.
