Spotlight Shines on Lowestoft’s Historic Crown Hotel as Calls Grow for Urgent Action
Last Friday, a diverse group of stakeholders, residents, and community organisations came together outside the Crown Hotel in Lowestoft to highlight the cultural, historical, and economic importance of the once-celebrated venue— and the urgent need to secure its future.
Led by Jess Asato MP, with support from Historic England, East Suffolk Council, and local historians, the event began with a walkabout highlighting the hotel’s rich architectural legacy and its prominent role in Lowestoft’s past. The Crown Hotel, located at 150 High Street, has long been considered a landmark, formerly hosting grand events and celebrations, and still holds enormous potential as a future asset for the town.
In particular, the group discussed how the venue could play a vital role in complementing the regeneration of the nearby Town Hall, which is currently undergoing redevelopment to host civic ceremonies, including weddings. Reviving the Crown Hotel would create a natural extension to these plans, offering space for receptions and community gatherings.
Following the walkabout, a packed meeting at the Mayfly Café brought together voices from across the community to express concern about the current state of this Grade II listed building. Many in the meeting expressed the importance of acting quickly to save the fabric of the building and making sure the site was rescued as a key asset — not only as a cherished historic site but as a key part of the town’s regeneration story.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a series of agreed actions were announced: • Jess Asato MP will convene a meeting with the current owner to explore viable options for the building’s future.
• East Suffolk Council will assess the current condition of the building to inform next steps.
• All parties committed to raising awareness of the Crown Hotel’s significance and promoting its potential role in the broader regeneration of Lowestoft.
Jess Asato MP commented: “It was inspiring to see so many people come together who care deeply about the Crown Hotel. It’s clear that this building isn’t just bricks and mortar—it’s a vital part of Lowestoft’s heritage and its future. I’m committed to working with the owner and local residents to ensure we find a positive way forward.”
The event served as a proactive step toward preserving an iconic building and ensuring it plays a central role in the town’s continued revival.”
