Jess Asato MP Meets Angels and Rainbows to Support Families Affected by Baby Loss

Recently, Jess Asato, MP for Lowestoft, met with volunteers from Angels and Rainbows at the Old Dairy Café to thank them for their vital work supporting families through the devastation of baby loss.

Founded by bereaved parents, Angels and Rainbows is a community-led support group for those who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death. Based in Lowestoft and run entirely by volunteers, the organisation offers peer-to-peer support, counselling, memory-making items, and a safe space to talk — all shaped by lived experience. The group aims to ensure no one has to go through such a painful time alone, offering support that is personal, compassionate, and grounded in understanding.

After meeting with some of the team, Jess said:

“Speaking with the Angels and Rainbows team was deeply moving. They’re doing remarkable work supporting parents at one of the most devastating moments of their lives — and doing it all from a place of understanding.”

Following the meeting the MP has also pledged to write to the Chief Executive of James Paget Hospital to explore how they can better support grieving mothers — especially ensuring they are not placed on the same wards as those giving birth. Given recent funding for the new hospital rebuild, Asato wants to explore how it plans to include a dedicated space for bereavement care.

Asato said: “It’s also crucially important that all midwives are given the right training to communicate sensitively with families who are experiencing loss. These moments are unforgettable — we have to get it right.”

Justine, the founding member of Angels and Rainbows, added:

“It meant so much to sit with Jess and feel heard. This kind of support helps us carry on making a difference for families. No one should feel alone in their grief — and we’re so grateful that Jess is championing that message.”

The organisation is currently preparing for Unicorn Fest 2025, a family-friendly music festival being held in memory of baby Catarina Garforth. Taking place on Sunday 1st June at the Lady of the Lake, 124 Bridge Road, Lowestoft, the event will feature indoor and outdoor stages and aims to raise vital funds to keep Angels and Rainbows going. The team hopes it will not only raise money but bring the community together to show support for bereaved families.
