Jess Asato MP Leads ‘Reclaim Corton Beach’ Walk to Tackle Inappropriate Behaviour
Jess Asato MP joined local residents and councillors for a community walk along Corton Beach recently to show solidarity with residents who have been left feeling unsafe on their local beach due to inappropriate sexual behaviour.
The symbolic walk followed a well-attended public meeting in March, where over 120 residents shared their concerns about sexual activity in broad daylight, intimidation, and exposure that had made Corton Beach feel like a “no-go area” for many families.
Jess Asato MP said:
“Residents in Corton have told me they are fed up with their beach being made a no-go zone due to criminal sexual behaviour. Our walk along this lovely beach symbolised the community’s efforts to ‘reclaim the beach’ so that no one feels afraid to use it and to send a signal that we will not tolerate what amounts in some cases to criminal acts.”
The walk was also supported by Duncan Gooch, Sales Manager at Azure Seas Holiday Village, whose business overlooks the beach and whose customers have also been affected.
Duncan Gooch commented:
"Although most would adopt a laissez-faire attitude toward nudity, when it comes to the fact that there is clearly a prearranged, darker side to this behaviour, and when residents, holiday homeowners and holidaymakers choose not to visit based on their experiences, attitudes and actions must change."
The walk marks the first step in a community-led push to reclaim Corton Beach as a safe, welcoming space for all, and to send a clear message that antisocial and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.
Local authorities are working with Suffolk Police to improve safety on the beach through measures such as increased patrols, better signage, CCTV, and clearer reporting channels for residents.
Residents are encouraged to report any concerns about inappropriate behaviour at Corton Beach and Gunton Cliffs to Suffolk Police by calling 101, using the online reporting service at: https://www.suffolk.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/, or in cases of immediate danger, by dialling 999.
