10 YEARS EXTRA IN PRISON FOR THOSE WHO MURDER THEIR PARTNER OR EX
Those who kill their partners or exes could face an additional 10 years in prison, the Government announced yesterday.
As the law currently stands, most domestic murders have a 15-year sentencing start point because they take place in the home with a weapon that was most likely already at the scene. However, for other murders where a weapon is taken to the scene with intent, the starting point is 25 years.
I am glad that the Government has committed to closing this 10-year gap so that domestic murders are given the same severity as other murders.
I want to pay tribute to Carole Gould, Julie Devey, and Elaine Newborough – mothers whose daughters were killed in domestic homicides and who have been campaigning tirelessly on this issue.
