Funding Announced to Investigate Flooding in Beccles

I am glad that the Government has recently announced £38,000 for Suffolk County Council to look into ways to alleviate surface water flooding in Beccles.

Roads like Fen Lane suffer particularly from surface water flooding (rather than flooding from the river) and I am delighted to see that the County Council, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, will be able to use this money in the next financial year to analyse the issue and design solutions.

As you will know, I continue to explore solutions to the problem that Lowestoft is the UK’s only coastal town without formal tidal flood defences. I met with the Secretary of State for the Environment before Christmas to discuss this issue, have ongoing discussions with the Flooding Minister, and am continuing to push for a new business case to ensure Lowestoft has the protection it needs. In the meantime, I have also held meetings on the possible use of nature-based solutions.

I recently also held a multi-agency walk-about Kessingland to better understand the chronic flooding and sewage issues blighting the area and will continue to push for real progress from agencies.
